Accessible Bathroom Plumbing in Scarborough

200+ five-star Google reviews

Easier fixtures, not a full rebuild: that is what most of these jobs come down to. Accessible bathroom plumbing in Scarborough is our name for the fixture side of staying put as you age, and every job is done by a licensed plumber from our Scarborough team. Tiling, screeding and wet-area membranes belong to separate trades, and we say so plainly when they come up.

Ageing in place is the plan behind the work, and the pipes and tapware are where we come in.

Step-Free Showers, Raised Toilets and Lever Taps

The plumbing side of ageing in place has five working parts, and each one changes a fixture rather than the whole room.

  1. Step-free shower

no hob and no step at the edge, so walking in or rolling in takes nothing to lift over.

  2. Comfort-height toilet

a raised toilet, meaning a pan taller than the standard one, so sitting down and standing up take less effort.

  3. Hand-held shower

a head on a flexible hose, parked on a rail or held in the hand, so a seated shower works.

  4. Lever mixer

it opens with a push or pull of hand or wrist, so twisting and gripping are off the list.

  5. Thermostatic tapware

a mixer holding its blend at one set temperature.

Our bathroom plumbing service covers the whole room, and the day-to-day faults like a dripping head live on our shower repairs page.

New Homes Compared With Existing Homes

Queensland has asked new homes for livable housing features since 1 October 2023: at least one shower you can walk straight into, plus bathroom and toilet wall framing strong enough to take grab rails down the track. Fixing the rails themselves stays optional. The provisions sit inside the Queensland Development Code and apply to a new Class 1 home or a new Class 2 unit.

An existing home runs on different rules. Shifting a shower or a pan in a building that already stands counts as notifiable work. No permit applies, and we lodge the Form 4 with the QBCC once the work wraps up.

Nothing in the code reaches back onto older houses. There, the fixtures change because you want them changed, not because a rule says so.

Comfort-Height Toilets and Lever Tapware

The fixtures we swap most often are a taller pan, lever tapware and a head on a hose. Replacing a tap or a toilet is licensed work in Queensland, and we do it.

A fixture swapped in its old spot counts as minor work: no permit, no Form 4. Installing an extra fixture, or shifting an old one, lifts the job into notifiable work instead.

Each product also needs its marks before it goes in. Toilets, cisterns, taps and showers need WaterMark certification and registration under the national water-efficiency labelling scheme, and the WaterMark is what lets a licensed plumber install them legally. A new vanity or basin riding along on the same visit gets the same check.

Keeping Water Temperature Safe at the Tap

Thermostatic tapware is a mixer that keeps its blended water at one temperature, which lowers the scald risk at the basin or recess. A thermostatic mixing valve does that job down at the fixture, and servicing one needs a licensed plumber who also holds the appropriate endorsement.

Queensland law also caps delivery temperature in a home: a temperature control device keeps water reaching the taps at no more than 50°C, a level that suits domestic hygiene while it cuts scald injuries. Our hot water page explains how that side of the system works.

Staying Put Around Scarborough

The suburb skews older than most of Moreton Bay: the median age at the last census was 53, and a retirement village stands on Oyster Point Road. Plenty of older residents would rather stay in their own home than move, and the bathroom is usually where that plan starts.

The requests we hear are practical ones, from beachside units along Oxley Avenue to older cottages a few streets back:

  • a lever mixer that pushes instead of twisting
  • a taller pan with an easier cistern button
  • a hand-held head parked over the recess

When the whole room comes out, the stage-by-stage version of the job sits on our bathroom renovations page.

Questions People Ask About Accessible Bathrooms

Call (07) 3523 6484

Does a new home in Scarborough need a step-free shower?

Yes, when construction started from 1 October 2023. Queensland's livable housing provisions ask new Class 1 homes and Class 2 units for one shower with no hob, and bathroom walls framed strongly enough to take rails later. Fixing the rails is optional.

Do I need council approval to move my shower?

No, council never sees it. Shifting a fixture in a building that already stands is notifiable work: no permit applies, and the plumber lodges a Form 4 with the QBCC afterwards. Swapping a fixture in its old spot stays minor work.

Do accessible toilets and taps need WaterMark certification?

Yes, every one of them. Toilets, cisterns, taps and showers need WaterMark certification and registration under the national water-efficiency labelling scheme, and the WaterMark is what lets a licensed plumber install them legally.

Who can service a thermostatic mixing valve?

A licensed plumber who also holds the appropriate endorsement. Not every licence carries it, so we confirm the endorsement before anyone touches the valve.

How much does an accessible bathroom change cost in Scarborough?

Two things set the price: whether the recess or pan shifts position, and how much wall and floor work the plumbing brings with it. Your fixed quote confirms the figure before any work begins.
