Our Scarborough service pages set out the repairs and installs in detail. This page covers the licences behind the work and how a visit runs.

The housing ranges from flats near the boat harbour to weatherboard cottages around Jeays Street. Licensed plumbing and gasfitting covers both ends.

What a Queensland Plumbing Licence Covers

A Queensland plumbing licence is a two-layer scheme: an occupational licence held by the person on the tools and a contractor licence held by the business taking the work on. Both come from the QBCC.

The two layers show different things:

  1. Occupational licence

    shows the holder's trade skills.

  2. Contractor licence

shows the business can carry the job financially and is set up to run work lawfully.

The trade then splits by task. A plumber's licence covers the supply and fixture side, outside anything carrying a separate endorsement. A drainer's licence covers below-ground drainage, again outside endorsed tasks.

Gas work stands apart from both. A licensed gasfitter is the only person Queensland allows to install, alter, repair, service, test or certify a gas system. Our gas fitting page sets out what that means for a cooktop or a heater.

How Plumbing Work Is Regulated in Queensland

Plumbing regulation in this state runs through the QBCC, the local council, a Form 4 for notifiable work and a gas compliance certificate. The QBCC runs the licensing scheme and the register of notified jobs. The City of Moreton Bay assesses applications, grants permits and inspects.

The documents you get depend on the job:

  1. Form 4

notifiable work ends with your Form 4 copy, and an address search on the QBCC's registers confirms the lodgement. Notifiable work is the class of plumbing work that must be lodged with the QBCC.

  2. Gas compliance certificate

gas work that adds a system or changes one ends with the licensed gasfitter handing you the certificate straight away. Where the system feeds from a network, the operator gets a copy inside 5 days.

An inspector from the council can view the job within 1 year of the QBCC notice, provided the occupier agrees. An owner can also ask for a check at any point.

How a Plumbing Job Runs From Call to Finish

  1. 1

    Describe the Fault

The call starts everything: what's dripping, blocked, cold or smelling, and which room it's in.

  2. 2

    Diagnose and Quote

We trace the cause on site, then a fixed quote goes in front of you before any work starts. Flat-rate pricing, no hidden fees.

  3. 3

Do the Work and Test It

The approved work is carried out, then tested before anything gets called finished.

  4. 4

    Hand Over the Documents

Any Form 4 or gas certificate lands with you where the job needs one, and you pay by card or EFTPOS when the job's finished, or Fix now, pay later if that suits you better.

Plumbing Licence Questions

Call (07) 3523 6484

Do gas fitters in Scarborough need a separate licence?

Yes, gas work needs a separate licence. A licensed gasfitter is the only person who may install, alter, repair, service or certify a gas system, and you can ask to see that licence before the job begins.

Is every job done by a licensed plumber?

Yes, every job is done by a licensed plumber. The business behind the work is licensed and insured, and locally owned and operated.

Who inspects plumbing work in my home?

The City of Moreton Bay grants the permits and sends the inspectors, and an owner can ask for a check of notifiable work at any point. The QBCC keeps the licensing side, and Unitywater looks after the public mains and sewer.

What does QBCC licensed mean for my plumbing job?

QBCC licensed means the state register holds an occupational licence covering the person doing the work and a contractor licence covering the business taking it on. We say QBCC licensed, never certified, because the scheme registers licences rather than certifying them.
