Why Showers Drip, Run Cold or Lose Flow

Drips, temperature faults and flow faults cover nearly every shower call we take.

A drip that carries on once the water is shut off points to the mixer, where a tired washer or cartridge stops sealing properly. The head is not the culprit. A little water left in the head after use is nothing to worry about; hours of dripping is.

  1. Cold or lukewarm water

the cartridge governs the blend of hot and cold, and wear can bias it cold.

  2. Weak or patchy flow

scale packed across the spray plate, a restrictor built into the head, or that same worn cartridge.

  3. Water at the threaded join

seepage there only while the shower runs points to a joint working loose or a seal past its best.

Our dripping shower head guide takes that first fault apart in more detail.

Where a Shower Head Swap Ends and Plumbing Begins

Yes, anyone in Queensland may swap a shower head: the QBCC treats that job as unregulated, and the result still must comply with the standards. The line stops at the head.

Past the head, the rules change. The arm, the wall mixer and the cartridge inside it are minor work. Minor work needs a licensed plumber, but no permit from council and no Form 4.

A handy homeowner who goes past the head is working outside those rules. An insurer can take a dim view of it later.

From the Shower Head Back to the Wall

From the outlet back to the wall, a shower is five parts: head, arm or rail, hose, and mixer.

  1. Shower head

the spray plate and its restrictor. Scale lands here first.

  2. Shower arm

feeds a fixed head from the wall behind. You can get at it without opening the wall.

  3. Rail and hose

a rail carries a handheld head on its hose, supplied at the wall outlet.

  4. Mixer and cartridge

the cartridge inside governs flow and temperature. An in-wall model means opening the wall.

  5. Diverter

with a bath spout in the same unit, the diverter picks the outlet. Spout water during a shower means a worn diverter.

When a Shower Repair Becomes a Replacement

Repair wins while the fault sits in one serviceable part; replacement enters the picture once wear is beyond a washer or cartridge, or the outlet itself is added or moved.

The rules matter at that point. Any tap, shower or flow controller needs WaterMark certification plus registration with Water Efficiency Labelling and Standards (WELS) before we can legally install it. A new dwelling needs a showerhead rated at 3 stars minimum, and renovations are exempt.

For rentals there is a flow test: Queensland lets a landlord bill a tenant for all water use only when the showerhead runs at 9 litres a minute or less. For fixtures dated 2005 or later, the Residential Tenancies Authority points to a WELS rating of 3 stars or more as the check.

Newer Units, Older Mixers

Scarborough has grown quickly: area-level estimates put population growth at 24.3% across the five years to 2025, with 2,090 dwellings approved over the same stretch. Many of those are the beachside units and townhouses this suburb is known for.

A mixer installed when a unit near Scarborough Road was new still wears out on schedule, and a stiff handle or drifting temperature is usually the cartridge inside it. On the older cottage streets around Oxley Avenue, salt air off the bay ages exposed brass faster than inland suburbs see, so arms and rails pit and weep sooner.

We check the era before quoting, because a cartridge swap and a full mixer replacement are different jobs. Bigger bathroom changes run through our bathroom renovation plumbing page, and water getting past the recess goes to leaking shower repairs. For the rest of the room, our bathroom plumbing page covers the fittings, and vanity and basin installation takes the counter work.

Shower Questions Scarborough Homes Ask

Call (07) 3523 6484

Can a plumber fix my shower in Scarborough?

Yes, for the fittings: heads, arms, rails, mixers and cartridges are all ours to repair. Water getting out of the shower recess is a different job, because that points to waterproofing rather than pipework.

Why does my shower run cold?

A worn cartridge can bias the blend cold, so the shower runs lukewarm. If the whole house has lost hot water, the water heater is the culprit, not the shower.

What causes low shower pressure in Scarborough?

Usually the fittings: scale across the spray plate, a restrictor in the head, or a worn cartridge trimming the flow. Weak pressure everywhere in the house points to a different fault.

Does a shower mixer swap need a Form 4?

No, a straight swap of one mixer for another is minor work: licensed plumber, no permit. A new or relocated shower outlet is notifiable work, and the QBCC receives a Form 4 within 10 business days of completion.

Do plumbers fix leaking shower walls?

Yes, when the water comes from pipes or fittings, because that is plumbing. A failed waterproof membrane behind the tiles belongs to a separate licence class, and we do not take that work on.
